Images Description Possible Issues
Image 1. Place thin layer of oil in shallow metal basin. Enough to cover stone. Place piece of plexi or wood on bottom of basin for a better backing for drilling into the stone. This will keep the metal from flexing and allow something for the bit to back into.
Image 2. Measure out hole placement using the wooden jig. The petal should be placed in the left bottom corner. Use the flat lap to flatten the bottom if the holes don't line up with the stone. When marking the rest of the stones, make sure to keep them facing the same direction.
Image 3. Either use pencil to mark spots or hold up to light. If using pencil, make sure you are holding up the FRONT of the stone to the steel frame. That way the pencil marks are on the front of the stone. You will always be drilling into the front of the stone. If using the light method - it only works with thinner stones. I recommend pencil method. Use sharpie to place a dot within the pencil marking. The pencil can be hard to see in the oil.
Image 4. Make sure that the cardboard cutout is as near to the end of the pegs as possible to get correct spacing between petals.
Image 5. Keep petals all in one direction. If needed, mark front of petals with tape to clarify.
Image 6. If any petals crack during drilling process, set them aside for gluing/fiberglass.
Image 7. Drill with smallest bit. 4mm. Drill very gently. Place on 380 speed. Too much pressure on the drill press will crack the stone pieces. Quartz is a hard stone, but can be brittle.
Image 8. Only use the drill press to start the hole and use a hand drill to go all the way through. The drill press' pressure can crack the stone and the hand drill allows you to slowly angle the cut for less pressure and will go faster.
Image 9. Wash off all oil in sink, dry with air.
