Stone Fruit Planters are a family of small, cast cement planters produced from 2013 - 2017 in the studio of Chen Chen & Kai Williams. They were made by making a silicone mold of actual fruits and vegetables and cast with a fine cement so that all the surface texture could be reproduced. The matte monochrome surface would emphasize the texture of each fruit as it deepened the shadows cast on the skin.
Production
This was the first semi-mass produced product the studio released. Thousands of planters were produced on a small worktable measuring 26 x 60 inches. Utilizing a fast setting cement allowed for quickly demolding of each batch which reduced the number of molds and space required for production.
