Leg Bowl
Design
The form of the 3 legged bowl was inspired by the Chinese Ding as well as the bol-sein by Sevres. In 2020 it was joined by the Arm Vase.
The factory producing the Leg Bowl was first used to produce the Stacking Planter, the design of which was specifically tailored for the process of slip casting. However after visiting the factory, it was revealed that this particular factory specialized in the production of nativity figurines. The decision was made to design for the strengths of the factory and shift from geometric forms to figurative forms. The disembodied limbs are a reference to the bol-sein which is a breast shaped cup resting on a tripod of 3 rams heads.
When the samples came in from the factory, it was apparent that the rough unglazed bottom of the foot (it cannot be glazed or it will stick to the kiln shelves) needed some kind of felt layer to protect any delicate surfaces the bowl will rest on. It made sense at that point to create a simple shoe as an accessory for the bowl. The legs use a 1/6th scale, the same as a Barbie doll so that doll shoe factories could produce shoes using their standard doll shoe lasts.
