Brutalist Stack boxes are an evolution of the Square Stack boxes. Both designs take inspiration from Brutalist architecture which is derived from the French name Béton brut meaning raw concrete. Béton brut surfaces show the wood texture of the formwork used to cast the concrete. The scale of these boxes made actual wood texture too big to read on the surface so OSB board was used as a replacement.
Production
Boxes are cast with fine cement capable of flowing into thin mold cavities and maintaining structural strength in thin walled features. Molds are made from a thin layer of silicone backed by a hard plaster shell. The shell provides the rigidity needed to replicate the square edges while casting while the flexibility of the silicone allows for it to be peeled back when demolding.
Normally a box would be cast with the pour spout on the bottom surface which can then be sanded smooth. However in this case, because of the "Chen Chen & Kai Williams" mark on the bottom, the pour spout is on a section of one side and the whole design is cast at a pitched angle.
Sizes
Brutalist Stack came in three modular sizes which could stack on a box of the same size or in conjunction with the other two sizes to create a variety of shapes. Different colors were offered so contents could be color coded.
